NIH strengthens institutional accountability for hostile-work-environment investigations

NIH says recipient institutions must complete and document investigations into harassment, bullying, retaliation, or hostile working conditions tied to NIH-funded activities even after a principal investigator or senior researcher leaves. The agency may withhold approval of an award transfer and share findings with a prospective employer. The policy raises compliance and hiring risks for universities, strengthens protections for research staff and trainees, and makes institutional handling of misconduct allegations more consequential for federal research support.
